Shahrul rescues Sabah

SHARUL AZHAR TURE (picture) turned saviour with two goals to help a lacklustre Sabah side to a 2-1 Premier League win over Putrajaya SPA FC at the Likas Stadium today. The pacey winger scored the first from a free kick after five minutes but an own goal from debutant Rhys David Weston saw SPA levelled after 28 minutes.

Sabah were awarded the first of two penalties 10 minutes later but Sharuddin Yakup saw his weak attempt saved by Muhamad Nuraizat Abd Aziz. There were little goalmouth actions after that before Sharul showed his prowess in dead ball situation by netting the winner from a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Coach David McCreery was glad with the three points but was far from satisfied from his players.

McCreery was clearly annoyed with their failure to send crosses into the box despite having focussed on it in training. “I am disappointed. We led and even missed a penalty early on. “We should have scored more goals. “Overall, I’m disappointed but happy to have won three points,” said the coach. Less than 1,000 fans turned up in the evening match as the 30,000-seater Likas Stadium was not fit to hold matches at night at the moment.
